THEY SHALL CAST OUT DEMONS – Dr. Derek Prince

I have discovered that an addiction is often like a branch growing out of another, larger branch. To help people, we may have to go beneath the addiction and discover the larger branch out of which it grows. Two common examples are continuing personal frustration and a deep emotional need that is not being fulfilled.

Let us take, as an example, two married women, one an Episcopalian and the other from the Church of God. Each is aware that her husband runs after other women, spends money on himself that she needs for housekeeping, and shows little interest in his family. Each is reaching out desperately for some source of comfort.

The Episcopalian walks across her living room to the cocktail cabinet and becomes an alcoholic. The woman from the Church of God, who would never go near an alcoholic beverage, goes to the refrigerator and eats everything in sight. She becomes a food- aholic – a glutton.

In either case, deliverance from the addiction, whether alcohol or food, will probably not be complete unless the branch that supports the addiction-each woman’s frustration with her husband-is dealt with. The best solution would be for the husband to repent and change. But even if he does not, the wife cannot expect to be set free unless she forgives him and lays down all her bitterness or resentment against him.

In the U.S. today more than fifty percent of all households are singles. As a result, the deep emotional need for loving companionship may be left unsatisfied. If a person feels betrayed and cut off by a parent, spouse or friend, he or she may turn instead to a dog or cat or some other pet. (Animals are often more loyal than humans-and also less demanding!) This longing for companionship may result in a strange kind of addiction.

Some years ago Ruth knew a Christian woman in Jerusalem named Joanna who had no living relatives but kept seventeen dogs in her house. She could not see a stray dog without taking it home. Wherever Joanna went, her dogs went, too. Some of them slept in bed with her. She was, in fact, “addicted” to her dogs.

When Joanna was suddenly taken ill and hospitalized, her dogs went crazy. They rushed continually to and fro, barking loudly. Eventually, an exasperated neighbor threw some poisoned food to the dogs and they all died. Soon afterward Joanna died, too. She had nothing left to live for.

In other cases, we may not become addicted ourselves, but we may be the cause of addiction in another. Busy parents may discover to their dismay that a teenage child has become addicted to one of the many drugs that are so easily available. Too late they discover that their son or daughter has turned to drugs as a substitute for the love and companionship they were too busy to provide.

Almost anything that is both compulsive and enslaving is an addiction, and there is no limit to the forms that addictions may take. In 1 Corinthians 6:12 Paul said, “All things are lawful for me, but all things are not helpful. All things are lawful for me, but I will not be brought under the power of any.”

This provides us with a scriptural definition of addiction: A person is addicted when he or she has been brought under the power of anything that is not helpful. I believe that addictions, so defined, are almost always demonic.

In attempting to solve their problems, people sometimes trade one addiction for another. It often happens, for instance, that a person gives up smoking and immediately puts on excessive weight. He or she has traded nicotine for gluttony.

Pornography is a tragic example of an addiction. The man enslaved by pornography finds himself compelled to tune in to those TV channels that satisfy the demon within. He cannot walk past a magazine or video display in a store; it draws him like a magnet. One pastor said to me, “When I travel, the demon wakes me up at two A.M. when the X-rated movies come on. I have to turn it on. I cannot control myself.” His whole body convulsed when the demon came out. But some years later he told me he was completely free.

Television is a largely unrecognized addiction. Some people cannot walk into a room without switching on the TV. It is not a reasoned action. These people may have no idea what they want to watch. They reach for the television set without thinking, just as an alcoholic reaches for a drink. In the long run, the social results of television addiction may be even more disastrous than those of alcoholism.

More recently the World Wide Web is spawning addictions. People have been classified as “addicts” because of social withdrawal and loss of control. Psychologists have discovered that addicts include such varied groups as housewives, construction workers, and secretaries. Side effects range from plummeting job performance to broken marriages.

Some forms of addiction have no recognized name. Lydia and I dealt with a young woman once who was a member of a Pentecostal church. She had a compulsive desire to sniff nail polish. “When I walk into the cosmetics department of a store,” she told us, “I’ve got two options. I can either buy nail polish or I can run out of the store. But I’ve got to do one or the other.” When she was delivered, the demon threw her down and came out screaming, just as it did from the man in Mark 1:26.

Another more familiar addiction is sniffing airplane glue or a similar product. This is amazingly common among young people, and often not recognized by parents.

Some addictions are more powerful or dangerous than others, but none is beneficial. Two socially acceptable beverages that can become addictive are coffee and soft drinks, especially caffeinated drinks like colas. According to statistics, the average American consumes 50 gallons of soft drinks in a year. Sometimes a person who stops drinking coffee or cola goes through withdrawal symptoms similar to those of a person going off hard drugs.

A decisive factor in the marketing of a commodity is the fact that it can become addictive. Once a person has become addicted, the producer is guaranteed a customer for life. Some tobacco companies in the U.S. acknowledged recently that they deliberately altered the nicotine content of their cigarettes in order to ensure addiction.

A SOUND MIND

2 Timothy 1:7 says, “For God has not given to us a spirit of fear, but of power, of love, and a sound mind.” What is a sound mind? The word, as used here, can also mean an orderly or disciplined mind. In fact, we need to be disciplined in all areas of our life, not just the mind, although that is a good place to start.

A disciplined mind is one that is under control, it does not flitter around like a hummingbird. To have a disciplined mind indicates that one is in the process of renewing it to the Word of God so that it does not think contrary to what God desires.

Can you see the word ‘disciple’ in discipline? One who is a disciple of Jesus will need to be a disciplined person to be able to resist the flesh, worldly thoughts, and one’s own ideas as to how God should act.

One who has a disciplined mind will be one whom God can trust! I had the privilege to teach at Dr. Lester Sumrall’s Bible College and make a few speaking engagements with him. Riding back in his plane, he told me how the Lord appeared to him in Jerusalem about starting the Joseph program where American pastors and churches would partner with third-world pastors and pray for and give finances to help them. He said to the Lord “I am 75 years old and why are you just now directing me to do this?” And the Lord responded, “I have just now gotten you to the place that I can trust you!”

God can use anyone who will submit to His Lordship, but those who are disciplined are the ones who last decade after decade because they are disciplined and know that good times and bad times happen but God remains faithful to Himself, His Word, and His children!

Can God use us? Perhaps an inventory of our life will reveal a need to be more disciplined in the Word, prayer, church attendance, finances, taking care of our possessions, and life in general. If areas need to be improved, I suggest starting by renewing the mind with the Word of God, specifically with those “great and precious promises” He has made to us!

THE DIMENSION OF THE SPIRIT

Science says there are at least four dimensions, length, width, height, and time. But I suggest there is another one greater than these, and that is the dimension of the spirit. The Scriptures tell us that God is Spirit (John 4:24) angels are spirit (Heb.1:14) and human beings are spirit (1 Thess.4:23-24). The Spirit of God and angels dwell in the spirit realm but can materialize and interact with the natural realm, while humans live in the natural realm but interact with them in the spirit realm.

The Apostle Paul tells us in Romans 8:1 that we should live according to the Spirit. He further says that ‘the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus has made me free from the law of sin and death.” (Rom.8:2). He says that those “who live according to the flesh set their minds on things of the flesh, but those who are according to the Spirit, the things of the Spirit” (Rom.8:5). He also says if the Spirit of God dwells in us then we are in the Spirit (Rom.8:9).

Paul further says “Walk in the Spirit and you shall not fulfill the lust of the flesh. For the flesh lusts against the Spirit and the spirit against the flesh, these are contrary to one another, so that you do not do the things that you wish. (Gal.5:16-17). The flesh produces adultery, fornication, uncleanness, lewdness, idolatry, sorcery, hatred, contentions, jealousies, outbursts of wrath, selfish ambitions, dissensions, heresies, envy, murders, drunkenness, revelries, and the like (Gal.5:19-21). And he says that those who do such things will not inherit the kingdom of God. Some will suggest that this person will not be saved but I would interject this means he will not at this present time enjoy the benefits of the kingdom of God now in this life, for the kingdom of God exists in our midst now as well as in eternity.

But the fruit of the Spirit produces love, joy, peace, longsuffering, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control. (Gal.5:22-23). If we examine our life we can determine which dimension we have been obeying!

The dimension of the spirit not only affects character issues but power issues as well. 1 Corinthians 12:4-l0 reveals the nine gifts of the Spirit and workings of the Spirit given by God as He wills (1 Cor.12:ll). Anytime we see one of these manifested, we have seen the Spirit realm invade the natural realm! Going a step further, any time one of the five ministry gifts is seen operating, one has seen the spirit dimension invade the natural realm (Eph.4:7-16). The fruit of the Spirit reveals godly character, and the ministry gifts reveal godly power, and all of these are from the dimension of the Spirit.

There is another type of being from the spirit realm that invades the natural realm known as demons. They are fallen spirits that attempt to influence us away from God and godly things thereby attempting to stop God’s work on the earth. But we have someone greater living in us (1 Jn.4:4, Col.1;27) through whom we have the victory. Standing on God’s promises we overcome the devil and his demonic hord in this life!

Disciples of Jesus have victory over the flesh and demons because of the victory won for us on the Cross and Resurrection in this life and for time and eternity!

AN ETERNAL SPIRIT IN A MORTAL BODY

Humans were made in the image of God (Genesis 1:26, Genesis 2:7) and God is spirit (John 4:24). Who we are is who we are internally, which is spirit and will exist forever. Because of the fall, all humans have been born with a propensity to sin. But because of Jesus’ sacrifice through the Cross and Resurrection, we can have eternal life. Our previously dead spirit will then have eternal life, the very life of God (Romans 8:9, 1 John.4:4, Colossians 1:13). To those who are born again, there is now no condemnation awaiting them (Romans 8:1, Romans 5:9, John 3:17-18, 1Thessalonians 5:9). In this life, we are supposed to live by the guidance of the Holy Spirit (who always leads us in line with the Word of God) from within the regenerated spirit (Romans 6:6-14, Romans 8:8-11,26).

The house we live in, this mortal body, will at the resurrection become immortal (1 Corinthians 15:35-57, 2 Corinthians 5:1-5). But for the time being, this mortal body causes us many challenges. It is subject to death, sickness, embarrassment, temptations, etc. But it can be made to obey the spirit from within. How? By bringing the mind, will, and emotions in line with the regenerated spirit. The re-born spirit already wants to obey God and His Word, but the soul (mind, will, emotions) has to be subjected to the spirit to accomplish that (1 Thessalonians 5:23-24). As we progressively bring the soul in subjection to the spirit, we discover more and more what is available to us today in the Spirit of God. We are told to walk (live) in the Spirit (Galatians 5:16-26). To the degree that we do that, the fruit of the Spirit will be evident in our life, as will the gifts and power of the Spirit!

HOW BADLY DO YOU WANT IT?

The gift of salvation is just that, it is a gift. It does not cost you anything. Life itself is a gift from God. Forgiveness of sins and power for service are all gifts from God. But we do have to approach God the way prescribed in the Bible (by faith) to appropriate these things.

When I had my Naturopathic office open, I saw many patients who would say they wanted to lose weight, change their lifestyle or overcome high blood pressure, etc. but were not willing to do what was necessary to get free of those problems. I see the same type of problems in the Body of Christ today.

For example, we are often told of the importance of reading, studying, and meditating on the Word of God. We are told to speak the promises of God because our words have power. We are told to come boldly to the Father in time of need, we are told to fast, etc. We all want the very best of what God has for us but often are not willing to put ourselves in the place we need to be to appropriate those things into daily life.

I notice how easy it is to say we want God’s blessings but not obey the conditions that may come with some of His promises! It is easier to complain about what we don’t have instead of believing and acting on the Word of God! If you want what God promises in His Word, start feeding your mind and spirit the Word of God – specifically His promises (2 Pet.1:3-4) and declare what the promise offers, believe it, say it, and obey it!

One of our Elders at New Life Church was having some health issues about a year ago. He was overweight and as a result of that other problems were manifesting. He determined to start by losing some weight, which he did, he lost 70 pounds in ten months by changing his diet and exercising, and taking no medications. He feels much better, looks better, has more energy, has no brain fog, etc. Most things are possible if you want it badly enough to act!

CAN A DISCIPLE OF JESUS BECOME UNBORN?

Since Adam & Eve, in the Garden of Eden, disobeyed God all of humanity has been born with a tendency to sin (Romans 5:15-21). Jesus said it was necessary that each of us believe in Him to be Born Again (John 3:3-6). That belief was more than a mental assent to a historical Jesus, but a decision to turn (repent) from our sin and turn to Him as our Lord and become His disciple (Mark 8:34-38, Matt.28:19-20). When one has done that, is it possible to become unborn? Recently someone asked me that question, so I present the following:

THE SIN QUESTION

Does one go to hell because of Adams’ sin? And does God send people to hell? For me, the Scripture is clear. John 3:16-18 says, “For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whosoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life. For God did not send His Son into the world to condemn the world, but that the world through Him might be saved. He who believes in Him is not condemned, but he who does not believe is condemned already, because he has not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God.” There are many other passages that speak to this topic, but I believe this is sufficient to answer the question, God does not send one into a Christless eternity but the individual does so himself by a refusal to repent and make Jesus his personal Lord and Savior. So it is not many sins that send one to hell but the SIN of rejecting Jesus as Lord!

CHOICES TO BE MADE

All of us make many choices each day and there are consequences to all of them. God told Adam he could eat the fruit of each of the trees in the Garden except for the Tree of Life (Gen.2:15-17). He and Eve disobeyed and suffered the consequence of being put out of the Garden and had his fellowship with God broken. Being born again restores that relationship and fellowship with God through Christ and results in all our sins being forgiven and cleansed from us (Eph.1:7, Col.1:13-14, 1 John 1:9). Now “There is, therefore, no condemnation to those who are in Christ Jesus, who do not walk according to the flesh, but according to the Spirit. For the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus has made me free from the law of sin and death” (Rom.8:1-2). It was never God’s intention that mankind suffer His wrath (1 Thess.5:9).

WHAT ABOUT THOSE WHO REJECT HIM?

They will spend eternity in the Lake of Fire (Rev.20:8,10,14,15).

WHAT ABOUT THOSE DISCIPLES OF JESUS WHO SIN AFTER RECEIVING HIM AS THEIR LORD?

Jesus has already provided forgiveness for all our sins past, present, and future. He has done all that He is ever going to do about them. When the disciple of Jesus realizes he has sinned (John 8:9, John 16:8-10), he should immediately go to God turning from his sin and thanking God for His forgiveness that has already been given!

THE STRUGGLE IS REAL

I awoke this morning thinking about my oldest brother, Luther, who was in WW2. He came home an alcoholic. I remember him saying on numerous occasions that he drank to forget all that he saw and did during the war. The trauma was called shell shock then, but today it is known as PTSD.

He would have times of sobriety, that generally would only last for a few weeks and then he would be back drinking again. He often said that he did not want to drink and live that way but seemingly could not overcome it. He was often in the hospital or jail because of it. Around 1971 he was in a veterans hospital, skin, and bones, and he could not eat anything because his stomach was one big ulcer. My father called a family prayer meeting at the church. After about an hour or so, he got up off his knees and said, ‘He is going to be alright, let’s go home.’

The next day one of my brothers talked to the chaplain at the VA hospital who said the night before (which happened to be at the time we were praying) he visited with my brother. He led Luther to Christ, as he genuinely repented, and as a result of that he not only got saved but delivered from alcohol, his stomach was healed and the next morning he ate a normal breakfast! In a matter of a few days, he came home from the hospital! Never to drink again. The Lord restored his family. He was able to keep a job and he lived for the Lord for about 27 years before dying in 1999!

Lots of people have addictions they deal with. It could be alcohol, other drugs, food, sex, movies, spending money excessively, etc. The struggle is real, but so is the victory! The apostle Paul knew something about struggling with the flesh. He said in Romans 7:15, “For that which I do, I allow not; for what I would, that do I not, but what I hate, that do I.” Regardless of the addiction the victory is the same, it is found in our relationship and fellowship with Jesus Christ as our personal Lord! (Romans 7:25)

Don’t battle against your addictions alone, make Jesus your Lord, and His Spirit will live in you and give you the strength to say “no” to it and infuse you with God’s supernatural power to be an overcomer!

KNOWING WHO YOU ARE

We are in a major identity crisis in our world today! We have males identifying themselves as females and females calling themselves males, and some of both genders identifying as cats or some other animal!

And the church has not escaped this either. For decades, and perhaps longer, we have had born-again individuals calling themselves ‘sinners’ when they have been forgiven and made new in Christ. And this can easily happen when one does not know who they are and what they possess in Christ.

The New Testament from Romans 1 – Revelation 1 reveals 168 things that the believer IS or POSSESSES in Christ! It is self-defeating or arrogant for a disciple of Jesus to call or speak about himself differently than what the Word of God says about him/her.

The book of Ephesians gives 42 of those things that we are or possess in Christ and they are given below. Read and re-read them until you actually start believing them! When you do, you will consciously and unconsciously start speaking them about yourself.

Ephesians 1

vs.3 blessed with every spiritual blessing in Christ.

vs. 4 chosen in Him…that we should be holy and without blame.

vs.5 predestined to be adopted as sons of Jesus Christ.

vs. 6 He made us accepted in the Beloved.

vs. 7 We have redemption through His blood…the forgiveness of sins.

vs. 9 He has made known to us the mystery of His will.

vs. 11 In Him we have obtained an inheritance.

vs. 13 In whom, having believed, you were sealed with the Holy Spirit.

vs. 14 we are His purchased possession.

vs. 17 given the spirit of wisdom and revelation through knowing Him.

vs. 18 the eyes of our understanding being enlightened that we may know the hope of His calling…what are the riches of the glory of His inheritance in the saints.

vs. 19 What is the exceeding greatness of His power toward us who believe.

vs. 20 we are seated with Him above all principality and power, and might and dominion.

Ephesians 2

vs. 1 Made alive from trespasses and sins.

vs. 5 made us alive together with Christ.

vs. 6 raised us up together and made us sit together in the heavenly places in Christ Jesus.

vs. 8 By grace you have been saved through faith.

vs. 10 We are His workmanship.

vs. 13 We have been brought near by the blood of Christ.

vs. 14 He is our peace who has made Jew and Gentile one in Christ… and broken down the wall of separation.

vs. 15 abolished in His flesh the law so He could create in Himself one new man from the two.

vs. 16 reconciled both to God through the Cross.

vs. 19 we are fellow citizens with the saints and members of the household of God.

vs. 20 we are built on the foundation of the apostles and prophets with Jesus as the cornerstone.

vs, 21 we are being fitted together and growing as a dwelling place of God in the Spirit.

Ephesians 3

vs.6 we are fellow heirs, of the same body, and partakers of His promise in Christ through the Gospel.

vs.10 the manifold wisdom of God to be made known by the church to the principalities and powers in heavenly places.

vs. 12 in whom we have boldness and access with confidence through faith in Him.

vs. 16. that He would grant you to be strengthened with might through His Spirit in the inner man.

vs.17 that Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith, that you, being rooted and grounded in love…

vs.18 that you are able to comprehend with the saints the greatest of the love of Christ.

vs. 19 that you may be filled with all the fullness of God.

vvs. 20-21 Now to Him who is able to do exceedingly abundantly above all that we ask or thin, according to the power that works in us, to Him be glory in the church by Christ Jesus to all generations, forever, and ever. Amen.

CRUCIFIED FLESH

In studying Scripture there are two words that often cause confusion. They are body (Gr.soma) and flesh (Gr.sarx). The flesh is most often referred to as human nature, or that which is external as opposed to soul or spirit.

We are tri-partite or three-part beings, spirit, soul, and body (1Thess.5:23). When one is born again it is his spirit that is born again ( John 3:6). The soul is predominately left unchanged at that moment. The Spirit of God comes to indwell the person’s spirit (Rom.8:9, 1 Cor.12:13). The soul (mind, will, and emotions) needs to be continually changed to reflect the reality that is now within the spirit (Rom.12:1-2, Eph.4:23). In the meantime, those areas of our life that as of now have not been changed are known as the flesh. Gal.5:19-21 says, “Now the works of the flesh are evident, which are: adultery, fornication, uncleanness, lewdness, idolatry, sorcery, hatred, contentions, jealousies, outbursts of wrath, selfish ambitions, dissensions, heresies, envy, murders, drunkenness, revelries, and the like; of which I tell you beforehand, just as I also told you in time past, that those who practice such things will not inherit the kingdom of God.” These are the types of things that the flesh will produce until the mind is renewed by the Word of God, the will is committed to the Lordship of Christ, and the emotions are harnassed.

Notice the following:

Gal.2:16 “knowing that a man is not justified by the works of the law but by faith in Jesus Christ, even we have believed in Christ Jesus, that we might be justified by faith in Christ and not by the works of the law; for by the works of the law no flesh shall be justified.”

Gal.2:20 “I have been crucified with Christ; it is no longer I who live, but Christ lives in me; and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave Himself for me.”

Gal.5:13 “For you, brethren, have been called to liberty; only do not use liberty as an opportunity for the flesh, but through love serve one another.”

Gal.5:16 “I say then: Walk in the Spirit, and you shall not fulfill the lust of the flesh.”

Gal.5:24 “And those who are Christ’s have crucified the flesh with its passions and desires.”

Gal.6:8 “For he who sows to his flesh will of the flesh reap corruption, but he who sows to the Spirit will of the Spirit reap everlasting life.”

Every person who is born again has a perfect standing before God, yet, none of us are without some flesh remaining in our life. The saints of old still had some flesh in their life though greatly used by God (Moses, Abraham, Paul).

We should consider ourselves dead to sin (Rom.6:6-11) and we should consider our flesh crucified with Christ also (Gal.5:24). As we do that, we will have fewer areas that satan can exploit since he walks about seeking whom he may devour (1 Pet.5:8).

ARE YOU PREMILLENNIAL?

Eschatology is the study of end-time events. Within that study, there are several areas covered, which means there are many different viewpoints covered.

TERMS

Millenium = 1000 years.

Premillennial = Jesus’ return is before the Millenium.

Postmillennial = Jesus’ return is after the Millenium.

Amillennial = Millenium is not an actual 1000 years.

In this short article, I will confine myself to just the premillennial positions because there are several variations of them.

No one knows when Jesus will return! Speculation abounds and has for 2000 years. Yet, Christians have been divided over the various viewpoints about His return and whole denominations have sprung up around varying beliefs about it. My purpose here is to basically define the terms and what is meant by them.

Premillennial pretribulation – Jesus’ return will be before the millennium and before the Tribulation.

Premillennial mid-tribulation – Jesus’ return will be before the millennium and in the middle of the Tribulation.

Premillennial post-tribulation – Jesus’ return will be before the millennium and after the tribulation.

One can hold either one of these three positions and still be known as premillennial.

The tribulation is a seven-year period often divided into two sections of three and one-half years each. The first three and one-half years is often called the tribulation and the second section is called the wrath of God.

Two words that are often used in referring to Jesus’ return are harpadzo which means to seize or snatch. It is found 13 times in Scripture. The most familiar one is in 1 Thessalonians 4:17, “Then we who are alive and remain shall be caught up together with them in the clouds…” This is often referred to as the rapture of the saints.

The other word is parousia which means appearing. It is most often referred to as the Second Coming of the Lord.

The most common belief among the Premillennial pretribulation adherents is that Jesus will come in a secret rapture and then sometime later return with His saints and set up His earthly kingdom.

But, there seems to be a growing trend toward the belief that Jesus will return before the millennium either in the middle or at the end of the tribulation. He will come at the last trumpet (1 Cor.15:52, Rev.11:15) and take up His saints (those who have previously died and those still living) to meet Him in the air and return to the earth to set up His Kingdom.

These beliefs are affected by how one interprets the Book of Revelation.

Many are surprised when they discover that many Christian leaders such as Augustine, Luther, and Calvin were amillennial; that Jonathan Edwards and Charles Finney were postmillennial, or that most of the early church fathers were premillennial but post tribulational.
